From 1960 through 1990, this historic building was excessively abused with insensitive alterations and with total neglect for its original materials and architecture. After thirty years of covering this building to where it could no longer be recognized, a young developer along with his architect saw the opportunity to bring the original building back to life.
Creative investigation into the existing structure to meet current egress and fire codes became an extensive part of the design work. Utilizing the “Existing Building Code” and the “historic property designation” within the Florida Building Code provided the design team latitude to solve the major code obstacles. This restored building stands on the comer of First and Hendry Streets, the center intersection of the Downtown Historic District.
