East Fort Myers is one of the most economically and a culturally diverse communities in Southwest Florida, with a mixture of Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics, and others living and working there. The East Fort Myers area has experienced both prosperity and decline throughout its storied history. Recent development interests along the river, coupled with increasing blight and neighborhood decline, have sparked the need for an overall strategy to guide and encourage the continued revitalization of this important part of Fort Myers. As an elected official wearing an architect’s hat, I had the professional knowledge and communication ability to assist our planning consultants as the “middle man” between the desires of the public and the provisions offered by the design professionals. This plan document, which evolved from many public meetings over a two-year period concluded as a comprehensive 162 page bound document, complete with recommended attainable action steps for both the private and public sector.
